Greater Washington Sports Alliance Announces Jim Speros as Sneakerball V Co-Chair

 

Washington, DC - The Greater Washington Sports Alliance (GWSA) announced Jim Speros as Co-Chairman of the fifth annual flagship fundraising event, the Sneakerball, scheduled for Tuesday, September 16th at the National Building Museum.  "We were excited we secured Jim onboard for such an important event.  He has a long history of success in sports and business in the area and we have confidence he will contribute to our accomplishments," said GWSA President Bob Sweeney.  Teamed up with GWSA Founder and Pricewaterhouse Coopers Partner, Fernando Murias, the two will lead the event host committee which works to raise money for the Sports Alliances' Foundation, in turn benefiting GWSA's League of Charities.

Speros established himself as an accomplished entrepreneur with a strong background built by several successful ventures in the technology, hospitality, and business industries.  Speros served on the Boad of Directors of Chalk Media and Braintech, Inc, is the Owner and Chairman of Velocity Five Sports Restaurant and Bar, located in Falls Church and Potomac Falls.  He is a founding partner and owner of the Presidential, a private corporate golf facility and serves as Vice Chairman of the National Capital Golf Ventures, owner of Virginia National and Salem Glen.

In the sports industry, Speros made contributions in several different fields.  Starting in his college years at Clemson University, Speros was a player on the 1981 National Championship football team.  As the President and Owner of two professional football franchises within the Canadian Football League (CFL), the Baltimore Stallions and the Montreal Alouettes, Speros won the United States' first and only Grey Cup Championship in 1995.  He also served as Vice Chairman of the CFL, as well as Chairman of the league's U.S. Expansion Committee.  Before his involvement in the CFL, Speros served five years as a coach for the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills.

Locally, Speros has played a role in several charitable causes including serving as a committee member at the JB Awards, Chairman of the 2008 Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health System gala, and Co-Chairman of the Maryland March of Dimes and Chairman of Special Olympics Maryland.

SneakerBall is an annual black tie and sneakers gala which joins the worlds of business and sports in a fun and unique atmosphere.  During the event, three local sports figures are honored for their outstanding work within the sports community before some of Washington's most prominent business leaders and sports professionals.  Funds raised from the event will benefit the Sports Alliance's Foundation which supports local organizations who use sports to build character and values, encourage physical fitness, and enhance education.  This year the following organizations have been selected to be a part of the League of Charities: Winners Lacrosse, Special Olympics District of Columbia, Fort Dupont Ice Areana, United for DC, and Progressive Sports & Entertainment Alliance.
